During my third year of undergrad I was responsible for putting together an IWD system for MRacing's second electric vehicle. After quite a bit of deliberation on how the system should look, myself and Chris Symonds put together this drive unit, comprised of a 35 kW electric motor coupled to a compound epicyclic gearbox that I had designed.
In total, each drive unit produced around 240 nm [177 lb ft] of peak torque at 1,300 RPM, resulting in a 130 kW [174 hp] car with a 125 kmh [78 mph] top speed. It ended up being, mechanically, very reliable and the team continued to use this design for three years.
